THE HOUSE OF THE RAJA
is inspired by Comas' experiences while living in an ancient decaying Malay palace in Thailand’s troubled deep south. This neglected region, rarely visited by Westerners, is populated by a majority of Malay-Muslims whose forbearers once lived in an independent Sultanate, annexed more than a century ago by Siam. Today, the region is struggling due to reoccurring attacks by militants and state repression by Thai armed forces. This work searches beyond the conflict to illuminate the long-hidden history of a place and culture that refuses to become lost to the past.
